“I worked with Ben for several years at Hyland software. Ben was the team’s lead developer and architect while I was the engineering manager. Coming to Ben’s team was my first time leading a team of developers and I relied on a Ben a lot. Ben has been with this team for a long time and in the industry even longer. He had prior experience as a manager so as a brand-new manager I went to him for a lot. Ben was always willing to sit down with me and help walk me through how to best handle a situation whether it was with a team member, another team, or another manager. This was totally outside of his job description and responsibilities, but Ben wants everyone around him to succeed. Ben understands the important of being a team player, helping and going above and beyond to make sure work gets done. When it comes to technical knowledge Ben is unmatched. One instance that comes to mind is Ben wanted another team in the company to use our SDK in their application, but the other team didn’t have the resources to do the work. Ben went into their code base, created a POC they could use as a guide then used that POC to run a bunch of performance tests to prove to that team why our SDK was better than they were using. Seeing how fast he was able to turn around a POC and all those tests while also staying on top of his daily work and helping me was truly impressive. Ben also wrote a custom security tracker that was better anything else the company was using. We were also the only team in the company to have our SBOM automatically generated because of custom code Ben wrote. I have countless stories of how much Ben has constantly gone above and beyond to help everyone around him, other teams and the company as a whole. Ben is always willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done and doesn’t cut corners to do it. I only worked with Ben for about two years but I enjoyed every minute of it. I can’t think of anyone I would recommend more than Ben.”

Agents are important, but we should understand that their true job-to-be-done is to serve as a bridge between human processes and AI models as they improve (and that they will improve every time we use them). They are *adapters* so that machines can use systems originally designed for humans. They appear human-like because they needed to fit into software originally designed for us, not because they are made in our image. And soon these tools will make their own tools, designed for their own use.

I wonder. Why when you cut a class from one source file to paste in in another - you have to deal with all the imports once again. It is really annoying. Ok, ok, you can move a class by F6/Refactoring. But Cut-n-Paste experience is way more natural than picking a target package/whatever destination you fancy to move your stuff to. Q. Do you experience the same frustration of this micro-UX problem?

It is rare I find an article that rings so true. This is also why interrupting a programmer is so expensive. You are interrupting the design process. Even if, especially if, they are not typing. The questions this drives home to me is "how can we enhance the thinking and designing process before we type?" I know that UML (Unversal Modeling Language) and visual design helps me greatly. These can be Entity Relationship Diagrams from the Database side, so long as you have a dynamic view of the system as well. This is also why just "read the code" is a slog. You have to extract out all of the implicit changes that went in, and even more obscure ones that didn't go in. This is also why eXtreme programming helps: it keeps the problem size small and understandable. But The thing that people don't emphasize from XP is the Shared Metaphor. That is the THING. And that may well be the result of a Big Design Up Front. So long as that metaphor, that model, is easily consumable, and easily tractable as you discover new things along the way.

Kyle does a great job to highlight the pains of translating a shared design system into shared styles between React web and React Native. I do like the use of types to enforce existing style primitives compared to hard coding numbers, but I understand that native mobile developers are not used to the compositional nature of the first design system, compared to shared styles via StyleSheet, NativeWind, or similar. Fusing mobile and web beyond the data layer becomes more and more tricky. react-native-web often isn't the answer. As "headless" components grow to help fuse HTML vs React Native components, we still have a need for sensible styling.
